gravity-free shaft

If a spaceship or a space station has more than one story, you may be able to go from one to another through a gravity-free shaft.  It goes up and down through the ship, like a lift shaft without the lift, but with doors at each level.  As the name suggests, it has no gravity plate to pull you down, so, when you step into it, you float in mid air.  You can pull yourself up or down by using the handles on the sides of the shaft.

Some Federation ships have gravity-free shafts, but most have lifts, which I prefer.

The Wanderer had a gravity-free shaft.  Its people had used it so often that they were expert.  They pushed themselves off one level, and flew to the one they wanted, where they grabbed a handle to stop themselves.  See Report 14.
