name, agent’s

Agents are allowed to choose their own names, but it must be a single word, and you can’t use the same name as anyone else. Tony and I were lucky that no one was using our names.

Most people use their own names, but we’ve met agents who chose the names of people they admired (eg Wellington, Columbus, Galileo).  Others chose names they happen to like (eg Ouzo, Obsidian).

During our training, one of the girls in our class told us that her real name was Fiona McLeod.  She couldn’t use the name, ‘Fiona,’ because her mother was an agent with that name.  Since ‘McLeod,’ sounds like ‘macloud,’ she chose the name ‘Cirrus,’ which is a kind of cloud.  I thought it was a charming name.
