4. DOC Y : How did you start these stories?

How did you start writing about Tony and Bea?

When two friends of mine read stories I’d written for adults, they suggested,  “You should write for children.”  I liked the idea, and it sent me back to a story I’d started years before, about an Earth boy who worked for the Galactic Federation because he could sense the feelings of other races.  I hadn’t taken the story very far – partly because I was busy, and partly because I couldn’t work out how the boy could find the Federation.  Then, one day I took the lift from the first floor to the ground floor of a big house.  As I pressed the button to open the door, I thought to myself,  “Wouldn’t it be a real surprise if this door opened to somewhere else?”  Then I thought,  “That’s how the boy could reach the Federation!”
